In the developed world we spend a lot of time planning. Our education persuades us to think in terms of long-term plans for a career; we expend energy in planning holidays and entertainment. Sometimes if our plans don't work out we suffer disappointment or even depression.

There is something to be said for being less organised and more spontaneous. Life can surprise is with an unexpected gift; we may catch a magnificent sunrise or sunset; we glimpse the dew shining on the early morning grass; we receive a message or a visit from a long-lost friend or relative, or are heartened by the kindness of strangers.

May we always recognise and value the special moments when they occur.
