For centuries, “religious revivals” have been the engine that brought about change: change in society, change in the church, change in the way people lived their lives. Some have been momentous – Martin Luther in the 17th century; John Wesley in the 18th century; at opposite ends of the spectrum William Booth (Salvation Army) and Cardinal Newman (the Oxford Movement) in the 19th century and people like Dwight Moody, Billy Graham, Donald Soper and Graham Kendrick in the 20th century. Interestingly, these are all individuals who had strong convictions and stood up for what they believed.
