At this time of year, Methodists have traditionally “renewed their Covenant with God”, as Mr Wesley put it. John Wesley introduced the concept of the Covenant Service on Christmas Day 1747 and based it on the practice of Puritans in the previous century. The first Covenant Service was held on 11 August 1755. Since then it has usually been held at New Year, but is sometimes held at the start of the connexional year (1 September) when ministers change station.
